New Orleans, LA - On Sunday July 23, Kirk Merritt, Wide Receiver for the New Orleans Saints, organized and hosted an art camp for a group of underserved youth from the New Orleans community.
The event, which is a part of Kirk's season long initiative with KID smART, a local 501 (c) 3, hosted 35 kids ages 7 to 10 years old. During the two-hour event, Kirk provided step-by-step guidance and hands on attention, showing the kids how to paint the New Orleans Saints' logo, the fleur-de-lis.
While Kirk shines on the football field, his true love lies in the art world.
"I am so excited to create more opportunities for kids from all walks of life to get involved with art and feel encourage and empowered to express themselves creatively," Kirk said. "Painting, for me, is not only an outlet but has been a true passion of mine since I can remember."
The children received donuts, a special KID smART tote bag, art materials from Mo's Art Supply, and Saints merchandise to further their artistic endeavors at home.
